CHAPTER SEVEN

Jack put the tray of food quietly down on the bedside table and placed the folded clothes on the chair beside the bed. He glanced at Tilly's innocent, angelic face and felt his heart clench with love and longing. She looked even smaller and younger in her sleep. Even though she looked so tiny and vulnerable, he knew that she was tough, resilient and she had an iron will to survive. She had grit, optimism, passion. She hadn't been broken down and defeated by her dire situation. She didn't give up. She wanted more, more for herself, more out of life.

Jack touched her soft, sandy hair. He would give her everything. He had told Tilly that he wanted her to be his forever, but she had simply raised a brow and flashed a quick, lopsided smile. Clearly, she didn't believe his declaration. In a few minutes, she had fallen asleep in his arms, and Jack had tucked her in carefully before leaving the room. He had to make sure that she had something to eat and something to wear when she woke up.

He stared at the neat pile of clothes on the chair. They should fit her just fine. He'd gone to his sister-in-law, Rachel, and asked if she had any old clothes to spare. Rachel was a curvy woman and he estimated that Tilly might be about her size. Her pre-pregnancy size.

Rachel had fixed him with a long look, one that told him she could smell a rat, or more accurately, a coyote. Being a mom to a cheeky, lively six-year-old honed her instincts and made her bullshit detector extra sensitive. And ever since she became pregnant, her senses seemed to have become particularly keen and sharp. Nothing escaped her. When she asked Jack what he needed her old clothes for, he'd fidgeted and mumbled something about helping a friend.

“What kind of friend?” Rachel had asked immediately.

“A good friend.”

“I see.”

Rachel had narrowed her eyes at him and harrumphed but thankfully, she didn't probe further. She had simply waddled over to her wardrobe and pulled out her newest pair of jeans and a loose-fitting blouse, and grabbed some brand new lingerie from her drawer. “Here. I can't fit into these clothes anymore, but I hope they fit your friend.” Jack heard her pointed emphasis on the last word.

At the door, Rachel had called out, “What's your friend's name?”

“Tilly,” he'd answered automatically.

“That's a lovely name.”

Rachel had waited quietly by her bedroom door, waiting for him to tell her more, to tell her the truth. But he couldn't tell her about Tilly. Rachel and Mikey had been attacked by a pack of coyote shifters. Wyatt had told him that Mikey sometimes woke up crying from his nightmares, and Rachel bore the physical scars of that vicious attack on her face and body. How would she react to having a half coyote shifter in the house?

“Thank you, Rachel,” was all he'd said as he nodded at his sister-in-law over his shoulder.

Jack refused to look back even as he heard Rachel close the door with a sigh.
